Community Update: Upcoming workshops, meetups, and WordCamps

Hello! Welcome to March. 🙂 We’ve got a handful of updates for you this week looking to the month(s) ahead: Upcoming hands-on WordPress workshops; meetups to check out; and WordCamps in the works.

WordPress Workshops

First up: HackerYou is running two back-to-back, part-time WordPress courses in the spring (April – June). From instructor Wes Bos:

This is a course for people who want to build complicated websites from scratch with WordPress — no theme tweaking here. We cover everything from the fundamentals of PHP all the way through to techniques for creating advanced and complicated interfaces in WordPress both on the back and front end. You’ll learn how to properly load and compile your Sass and JavaScript resources into a theme.

We will learn both the hard technical skills, but also the soft skills that I use to bill $130/hour for freelance WordPress consulting gigs.

Head over to the HackerYou website to learn more.

If you’re looking for something on the other end of the spectrum, Camp Tech’s next WordPress for Beginners workshop is coming up in May. This is a good choice if you’re just getting started with WordPress and aren’t looking to touch the code. (In the meantime, you can check out their many, many other workshops.)

Our friends at LearnWP have a two-day WordPress workshop on April 6-7 in the city’s west end. This may be a good choice if you need more time and guidance to learn WordPress in a weekend.

WordCamps in the works

WordCamp Halifax is happening for the first time EVER on May 27th. The speaker application deadline is today, so if you’re interested in presenting, get on it.

South of the border: WordCamp Atlanta on March 18-19, WordCamp Miami is on 24-26, and WordCamp San Diego is on 25-26. If you’re part of the contingent of Canadian snowbirds heading south, please let us know in the Facebook group if you’re going. (And bring us something nice, would ya?)

Wondering what’s happening with WordCamp Toronto 2017? Head over to the website and sign up for email updates. You’ll be the first to know when details are shared!
